How to prepare for your flooring fitters

Nothing here is compulsory, and we will muck in with the heavy lifting either way. But a room that is ready means we fit faster, tidier, and you get your house back sooner.

Before the day

  • Clear small items, ornaments, lamps, books and anything breakable out of the room
  • Empty wardrobe bases and drawer units if you can — we can move them full, but they move more safely empty
  • Take curtains down if they touch the floor
  • Disconnect and pull out electricals you want moved: TVs, computers, hi-fi
  • Tell us about anything fragile, heavy or awkward before the day, not on it
  • Sort parking if you are on a permit street or a tight road — we arrive with rolls and tools

On the day

We will lift and take away the old floor, move the remaining furniture, fit, trim and clean up. Expect noise, a bit of dust from cutting, and doors propped open while we carry rolls through.

Keep pets in another room or out of the house if you can. Grippers have pins in them and knives get put down for seconds at a time.

Doors that may need easing

A new carpet with new underlay can be thicker than what came out, so an internal door can catch. We can usually ease a door on site. Where the floor build-up is a lot higher, the door may need taking off and trimming, which we will flag at the measure rather than surprise you with.

Skirtings, decorating and order of work

If you are painting, paint first and let it dry properly. Flooring goes in last — it is the one thing you do not want ladders and dust sheets over afterwards.

If skirtings are coming off and going back on, tell us at the measure so we can plan the edges and thresholds around it.

Afterwards

Vacuum a new carpet gently for the first couple of weeks and expect some loose fibres — that is normal shedding, not the carpet failing. Keep heavy furniture off a new glue-down LVT floor for 24 hours, and off a new resin floor until we say it is cured.

Quick answers

Do I need to move furniture before carpet fitters arrive?
Clear small and breakable items and empty wardrobes and drawers where you can. We move the larger furniture ourselves as part of the job.
Do flooring fitters take the old carpet away?
We do — lifting and disposing of the old floor and underlay is included in our quotes, so nothing is left in your garden or driveway.
Should I decorate before or after new flooring?
Decorate first and let the paint dry. Flooring should be the last job in a room so it is not walked on by ladders or splashed afterwards.
Will a new carpet stop my doors from closing?
Occasionally, if the new carpet and underlay are thicker than the old floor. We can usually ease the door on site, and we will warn you at the measure if a door will need taking off and trimming.
