What makes a kitchen floor last

Two things: it has to be genuinely waterproof, and it has to be fitted flat. Laminate swells the first time a dishwasher weeps behind the units, which is exactly why we no longer fit it. LVT does not care about water at all — a spill sits there until you wipe it up.

Flatness is the part people do not see. LVT is thin and glued down, so it copies whatever is beneath it. We clean, prime and level the sub-floor with a smoothing compound before a single plank goes down, because a bump you can barely feel with your hand will show as a shadow across the floor once the light hits it, and a hollow will eventually crack a joint.

Then there is the cutting, and in a kitchen that is most of the skill. Planks have to die neatly into kickboards, run square with the units rather than the walls (which are rarely square), and carry the same direction through the doorway into the hall so it reads as one floor.
