How much does carpet fitting cost?
We quote carpet every week across Northamptonshire, so these are real figures rather than a national average scraped off a comparison site. Prices below are supplied and fitted, which is how most people actually want to see them.
The short answer
Carpet supplied and fitted usually works out at £15–£35 per square metre. The low end is a hard-wearing budget carpet for a rental or a spare room; the top end is a thick wool-mix or a heavy-duty twist for a lounge or a busy hallway.
That figure includes the carpet, the underlay, grippers, door bars, moving the furniture, taking the old floor away and the fitting itself. There is no separate labour bill bolted on at the end.
Typical room costs
Rough guide prices for a full supply-and-fit, based on jobs we do regularly:
- Small bedroom (around 9 m²) — £140 to £320
- Double bedroom (around 14 m²) — £210 to £490
- Lounge (around 20 m²) — £300 to £700
- Straight staircase, 13 steps — £220 to £400 as a package
- Stairs and landing together — £350 to £600 as a package
- Whole three-bed house, carpet throughout — £1,200 to £2,400
Why stairs and hallways are priced per job
You can spend most of a day on a small hallway or a turning staircase, so pricing those strictly by the square metre does not work for anybody. Every tread and riser is cut, wrapped and kicked in individually, and winders take longer again.
We quote those as a fixed package based on the number of steps and turns. It comes out fairer for the customer and it means the price on the paper is the price you pay.
What pushes the price up
Things that genuinely change what we charge:
- Carpet quality — this is the biggest single factor by a distance
- Underlay — a thicker, better underlay costs a little more and makes a cheap carpet feel expensive
- Stairs, winders, galleried landings and awkward shapes
- Patterned carpet, which has to be matched and wastes more material
- Lifting and disposing of old carpet, laminate or tile
- Sub-floor work — loose boards, screed repairs or levelling before we can fit
What we would not pay for
Be wary of a quote with a separate 'fitting fee per square metre' on top of a suspiciously cheap carpet price, and of anyone quoting over the phone without measuring. Roll widths are 4 m and 5 m, so a room's shape changes how much carpet has to be bought — nobody can know that without seeing it.
Also be careful of free fitting offers where the carpet price has quietly been inflated to cover it. Ask for one itemised total.
