How long does new flooring take to fit?
Most people are surprised how quick fitting is — and how much of the timeline is preparation rather than laying. Here are honest timings from jobs we do every week across Northamptonshire.
Typical fitting times
Assuming a sound, level sub-floor and a clear room:
- One bedroom in carpet: 1–2 hours.
- Stairs and landing in carpet: half a day to a full day, depending on winders and spindles.
- A whole three-bedroom house in carpet: usually one day.
- A kitchen or hallway in LVT: one day, sometimes two if it needs levelling compound.
- A large open-plan ground floor in LVT: two to three days.
- Laminate in a single room: half a day.
- Epoxy resin in a garage: two to three days, mostly waiting for coats to cure.
What actually slows a job down
It is almost never the laying. It is the sub-floor: loose or squeaky boards, old adhesive, an uneven screed or damp all have to be dealt with first, and levelling compound needs time to dry before anything goes on top.
Furniture, doors that need easing and old flooring that has been glued down all add time too. We flag any of this on the measure so the quote and the day are realistic.
From first call to finished floor
A normal timeline looks like this: we measure within a few days of your call, you get an itemised written quote, and once you have chosen your flooring we usually fit within one to two weeks. Stock ranges can be quicker; special orders depend on the supplier.
How to get ready
You will get a faster, tidier job if you can:
- Empty wardrobes and drawers and take down curtains in the rooms being done.
- Tell us in advance about heavy furniture, pianos or fitted units.
- Keep pets in another room while we are cutting.
- Arrange parking near the door if you are on a narrow street.
Can you walk on it straight away?
Carpet and click LVT or laminate can be walked on as soon as we finish. Glued-down LVT wants a few hours before heavy furniture goes back. Epoxy resin needs to cure — light foot traffic after 24 hours, vehicles usually after several days, and we will give you exact times on the day.
