How much does herringbone LVT flooring cost?

Herringbone is the most popular pattern we fit at the moment, and the first question is always what it costs compared with straight planks. Here are the real numbers we quote across Northampton and Northamptonshire, and what makes a herringbone floor cost more or less.

Herringbone LVT cost per square metre

Herringbone LVT supplied and fitted is usually £85–£100 per square metre. That includes the planks, adhesive or the click system, setting out the pattern, cutting the perimeter, door bars and taking your old floor away.

Small or awkward areas — a hallway, a landing, a cloakroom — are quoted per job rather than per square metre, because the setting out and the cutting take the same skill whether the room is three metres square or thirty.

Why herringbone costs more than plank LVT

The material is much the same price. The difference is labour and waste.

  • Setting out: the pattern has to be centred on the room and squared to the main sight line, or every cut at the walls looks wrong. That is done before a single plank is stuck down.
  • Cutting: a herringbone perimeter is a run of angled cuts rather than straight ones, so it simply takes longer.
  • Waste: expect more offcuts than a plank floor, which is factored into the material allowance.
  • Sub-floor: herringbone shows every hollow and hump, so levelling matters more than it does with plank.

What changes the price on your job

Two rooms of the same size can quote differently. The things that move the number:

  • Sub-floor condition — latex levelling compound or ply overlay is priced separately if the floor is not flat.
  • Room shape — bays, islands, chimney breasts and lots of doorways all add cutting time.
  • Glue-down versus click — glue-down is the better long-term floor and the more skilled fit; click herringbone is quicker.
  • Underfloor heating — fine with LVT, but the build-up and the commissioning need doing properly.
  • Removing and disposing of the old floor, and whether furniture needs moving.

An example quote

A typical Northampton kitchen-diner of around 25 square metres in glue-down herringbone LVT comes out around £2,100–£2,500 supplied and fitted, assuming the sub-floor only needs a skim of levelling compound. A whole downstairs of 55–60 square metres is usually £4,700–£6,000.

Those are guide figures to help you budget. We give a written fixed price after measuring, so there are no surprises later.

Is herringbone worth it?

If you like the look, yes — it is the single change that makes a hallway or kitchen feel finished, and it costs the same per square metre as our standard LVT range because the price band already covers the pattern work. It is not a floor to fit cheaply, though: badly set out herringbone is obvious forever, so it is worth using someone who fits it regularly.

Quick answers

How much is herringbone LVT supplied and fitted?
Usually £85–£100 per square metre supplied and fitted in Northampton and across Northamptonshire, including adhesive, setting out, door bars and removal of your old floor. Hallways, landings and small rooms are priced per job.
Is herringbone LVT more expensive than plank LVT?
The material costs about the same. Herringbone takes longer to set out and cut and generates more waste, so it sits at the top of the same price band rather than in a higher one.
Is herringbone LVT harder to fit?
Yes. The pattern has to be centred and squared before fitting starts, and the perimeter is all angled cuts. It is a fitting job worth giving to someone who does it often.
Can herringbone LVT go over underfloor heating?
Yes, LVT works very well over underfloor heating. The heating needs commissioning correctly and the floor has to be flat and clean first.
Glue-down or click herringbone LVT?
Glue-down is the better floor — quieter, more stable and the more professional finish. Click herringbone is quicker to fit and a reasonable option in a bedroom or a low-traffic room.
How long does a herringbone LVT floor take to fit?
A kitchen or hallway is usually one to two days once the sub-floor is ready. If levelling compound is needed it has to dry first, which can add a day.
